Level 2 First Aid: Advancing Your Life-Saving Skills

So you want to grow your first aid knowledge? It’s always good to level up. The more you know, the better you are equipped to save someone’s life. Like many people, you may have heard of Level 2 First Aid but have been struggling to find information on what it really is and how to do it.

What was Level 2 First Aid?

Level 2 first aid is an outdated name that hasn’t been used for years in Australia. Rather than referring to a more advanced first aid course, in the past, “Level 2 First Aid” referred to a common first aid course that was nationally recognised in workplaces.  Today, a nationally recognized first aid course that most workplaces recognise is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.

Level 2? Looking to level up?

But what if you’re looking to level up your first aid skills beyond the average course? In that case, you might consider the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course. This comprehensive training program is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide an advanced first aid response in a variety of challenging situations.

What does the course cover?

During the HLTAID014 course, you’ll learn how to manage a range of life-threatening conditions, such as hypothermia, hyperthermia, head, neck, and spinal injuries. You’ll also gain hands-on experience using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings (yeah these guys are amazing!) to control severe bleeding, and learn how to effectively manage a casualty in shock.

In addition to covering basic first aid and CPR techniques, the course delves into more complex scenarios, such as dealing with multiple casualty incidents, safely moving or extricating casualties, and treating potentially fatal illnesses and injuries. Through practical simulations and real-life scenarios, you’ll build the confidence needed to coordinate and manage a first aid response in line with legal, community, and workplace considerations, as well as the guidelines set by the Australian Resuscitation Council and other national peak clinical bodies.

One of the best ways you can help someone in an emergency is by recording what happened with the right information for emergency services. We’ll show you the correct way to do it and to document incidents in the workplace.

Let’s be honest, helping someone in a real life emergency could be traumatic so we’ll help you learn about conducting debriefings and seeking help for yourself and others.

So to recap: what sets the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course apart from the more basic HLTAID011 Provide First Aid? While both courses cover essential first aid skills and knowledge, HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid goes a step further by addressing more advanced techniques and scenarios. It’s particularly suitable for individuals who, due to their workplace or community involvement, may be called upon to provide a higher level of first aid response.

What Should You Know About Advanced First Aid?

In Queensland and throughout Australia, the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid certificate is valid for thirty six months from the date of issue. However, it’s recommended that you refresh your CPR skills annually to stay up-to-date and prepared for emergency situations.

If you’re considering taking the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course, you might be wondering if it’s possible to complete it entirely online. While some components of the course can be done online, a significant portion requires hands-on, face-to-face training with a qualified instructor. This practical application is crucial to ensure that you can competently demonstrate the required skills and be ready to apply them in real-world situations.

Jack Majlinger

Hi there! I'm Jack Majlinger. I began my first aid journey back in 2012, with my first "first aid" course. It was after a hiking accident where a friend had to be airlifted. Over the years, my first aid skills grew, I volunteered at equestrian events and local shows and became a first aid trainer. When I'm not working on content, I enjoy spotting birds in the wild and writing jangle pop tunes.
