Why do a Youth Mental Health First Aid Course?
Evaluations consistently show that Mental Health First Aid training improves a participant’s knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. MHFA courses have also been shown to decrease stigma and increase help-seeking behaviours.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches any adult (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adolescents experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.
Learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in young people, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
Mental health problems covered:
- Depression
- Anxiety problems
- Eating disorders
- Psychosis
- Substance use problems
Mental health crises covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe psychotic states
- Severe effects from alcohol/drug use
- Aggressive behaviours
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Any adult seeking to support young people in their line of work, at home or community can attend and is expected to gain benefit from it for themselves and the young people in their lives.
Please Note: This course is not a therapy or a support group.
Minimum Age
18 yrs for a Youth Mental Health First Aid Course.
Due to the adult learning environment, we can not accept MHFA registrations for participants under the age of 18.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Requirements
Participants will require suitable LLN skills to complete the following tasks/skills:
- Read information from a PowerPoint, Manual and whiteboard
- Listen and understand verbal information delivered by an English-speaking
Youth Mental Health First Aid Accredited Instructor.

The online and blended course format options require each participant to complete compulsory online learning and assessment.Â
Therefore, to complete the Youth Mental Health First Aid course, each participant will need access to an internet-ready device for a duration of 4 to 6 hours self-paced, prior to the virtual or in-person session with the instructor.
Once booked, you will receive a link for participants to create an account and access the e-learning material.
This course does not form part of a Vocational Education Qualification.
Accreditation is provided by Mental Health First Aid Australia.
On successful completion of the post-training assessment, certification is issued as a Mental Health First Aider.
Certification Validity
* Three (3) years from the date of issue.
(We recommend you use the email address that is still valid in 3 or 6 years time).
* Refresher training is required after 3 years, which is either a 4 hour Face to Face course or 2 x 2.5 hours online video conferencing course.
* In the sixth year, the full course must be completed again.
