When it comes to first aid courses, there are two key options you may be considering.

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, and
  • HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid.

So, what’s the difference between the standard and advanced first aid course? And which one should you choose for your needs?

In this blog post, we will compare HLTAID014 Provide Advanced first aid course to the standard HLTAID011 Provide first aid course and highlight the differences between the two courses.

Both courses are nationally recognised units of competency. The standard provide first aid course is a pre-requisite for completing the advanced first aid course, but they are most often completed together.

My First Aid Course Brisbane offers the standard and combined courses at weekly public course sessions as well as for onsite group courses.

What is Advanced First Aid?

The advanced first aid course is for people who want to learn more than the basics of first aid or are required to oversee and manage first aid resources and protocols in the workplace.

In this course, you will learn how to deal with more serious injuries and emergencies and how to use specialised first aid equipment in the event of an emergency.

This combined course includes the following units of competency:

  • HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

What is HLTAID011 Provide First Aid?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the current standard workplace first aid qualification that will teach you how to provide basic first aid in emergency situations.

Brisbane First Aid Training Course

The course covers topics such as how to assess an emergency situation, how to provide CPR and first aid treatment for common injuries and illnesses, and how to deal with medical emergencies.

The course includes the following units of competency:

  • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

How long is First Aid vs Advanced First Aid?

While the advanced first aid course covers more content and is therefore expected to be a longer duration, My First Aid Course offers both courses in a blended learning format, in which pre-course online learning is completed before attending which significantly reduces the time required for in-person practical training.

To complete these courses, participates will be required to attend the following in-person course sessions at any one of our North Brisbane first aid course locations or in a group setting at their workplace:

Side-by-side comparison

Training.gov.au outlines the elements and criteria of both units of competency and by comparing them side-by-side we can see clear differences in the elements that make up the course content and learning outcomes.

We have highlighted in orange the additional components of the advanced first aid course, that are not included in standard provide first aid.

Summary of course differences

To summarise the above table, both courses include foundational elements pertaining to first aid delivery, like how to:

  • Respond to an emergency
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Communicate details of the incident, and
  • Review the incident.

In addition, Advanced first aid covers how to:

  • Coordinate first aid activities until the arrival of medical assistance.

And further, it includes additional components to the aforementioned areas, which include:

  • Deploy resources to appropriate locations as required in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures.
  • Perform single-rescuer or two-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Operating ancillary equipment, and
  • Arranging support services for personnel involved in the incident in accordance with relevant procedures.

What is the cost difference?

While the HLTAID011 Provide First Aid course, at around $115 per person, offers a cost-effective way to acquire essential first aid skills, the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course, priced at $300 per person, provides far more in terms of advanced training and hands-on experience. The price difference may seem substantial at first glance, but the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course delivers significantly more comprehensive training, making it an outstanding investment. Participants gain critical skills in managing complex emergency situations, including the use of specialized equipment, coordination of resources, and overseeing multiple casualties. In high-risk environments like construction, remote worksites, or healthcare settings, these capabilities can mean the difference between life and death. Given this, the $300 cost is exceptionally affordable when compared to the potential risks of not having personnel trained at this level.

When you consider other professional development courses in Australia, the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course is a bargain. Many other industry-specific certifications, such as safety or compliance training, can easily exceed $1,000, and these often don’t equip you with the immediate, practical life-saving skills that advanced first aid does. In comparison, spending $300 on the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course ensures that you are prepared to act in emergencies, which could be invaluable in a crisis. Furthermore, compare this to everyday expenditures: a basic smartphone or home appliance can cost upwards of $500, yet these items won’t provide the critical, potentially life-saving skills that you gain from advanced first aid training. For the peace of mind and ability to protect others, the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course represents exceptional value.

For those needing even more specialized skills, such as advanced resuscitation, the HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy can be added to the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid course for $445 per person. This includes a longer, 7.75-hour practical session and additional training to manage life-threatening situations that require advanced resuscitation techniques. Again, considering the cost of similar professional certifications, $445 for this level of expertise is quite affordable. In the medical or childcare sectors, where these skills could directly save lives, the HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid with advanced resuscitation is an invaluable qualification. When compared to other training programs that cost thousands of dollars and may not have as immediate an impact, this investment is a fraction of the price for a potentially life-saving skill set.
